Kuruzovich uses Concourse, a new online syllabus platform, in all three of his 2010 classes at Lally. Although online syllabus features are well established on course management systems such as Blackboard, Concourse offers many new features that allow faculty members to customize a course syllabus, update it as needed, and sync the syllabus with students’ calendars in applications such as Microsoft Outlook or Google Calendar.

Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson has announced the appointment of Iftekhar Hasan as acting dean of the Lally School. Hasan, the Cary L. Wellington Professor of Finance, is also director of the International Center for Financial Research, co-director of the Ph.D. program, and area coordinator of accounting and finance for the Lally School.

On April 10, twenty nine Lally undergraduates were inducted into the Epsilon Delta Sigma Management Honor Society. Founded in 1948, Epsilon Delta Sigma has a long history of serving Rensselaer and the community. A team of students from Rensselaer and Denmark Technical University (DTU) has made it to the semi-finals of the 2010 Dell Social Innovation Competition. The team, OroClean, proposes to eliminate up to 30% of the world’s mercury pollution with an innovative mining method for artisanal miners.

Severino Center Launches Student Sandbox Summer Program for Entrepreneurs Apr 30, 2010 05:20PM
The Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship (SCTE) has created a multi-disciplinary summer program to help student entrepreneurs move forward with business concepts focused on market needs. Gersten, a senior in business and management and captain of the RPI women’s hockey team, was named the 2009-10 Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year. One of three finalists, Gersten won the award over Dartmouth College’s Sarah Parsons and Harvard University’s Randi Griffin.

Mithani, William Maio ’10 Engineering, and Professors Susan Walsh Sanderson (Management) and Ken Simons (Economics) attended the Smart Lighting ERC Industry-Academia Day, held at RPI’s core partner Boston University, showcasing the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) to industry. More than 135 researchers, students, and industry executives participated in a program of presentations, posters and panel discussions. A highlight of the program was a lineup of 10 finalists in the student poster competition presenting their research findings in a 90-second ‘elevator pitch’ style.

Dr. Sanderson was one of 18 panelists selected from industry, non-profits, government and academia to participate in a policy roundtable on “Fast Tracking Widespread Adoption of LED Lighting” at The Institute for Energy Efficiency at UC Santa Barbara in early February. The discussion focused on new solutions to accelerate widespread adoption of energy-saving LED lighting, while identifying current policy inhibitors to adoption.

Saigon Hi-Tech Business Incubator Launched by Severino Visiting Scholar Jan 31, 2010 11:31AM
Thao Ly Bui Tran, a 2008 visiting scholar at Lally’s Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship, serves as the program manager for the newly-opened Saigon Hi-Tech Business Incubator (SHBI) in her native Vietnam.
